The current main building was built between 1882 and1885 by governor Carl Magnus Creutz. The largest surviving Medieval castle in Finland, it is also one of the oldest buildings in the country still in use and has served many purposes over its 700-year history, from a defensive bastion to a majestic court, an administrative centre, prison, storehouse and a barracks, today being one of Finland’s top tourist attractions. Malmgård is one of the most magnificent manor houses in Finland. The history began in 1606 when Carl IX of Sweden donated 30 local farms to Estonian war widow Catharina Hess von Wichdorff. One of the gorgeous attractions of the Loviisa region is a red brick Malmg ård castle built in the style of neo-reneessance. There is a cereal shop and a brewery and in the summer you can get to Henrik Creutz's guided tour. Originally named Sveaborg (Castle of the Swedes), or Viapori as referred to by Finnish-speaking Finns, it was renamed in Finnish to Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons, though it is still known by its original name in Sweden and by Swedish-speaking Finns.
